Text Summary: The Top Strategy for Providing Access to Opportunities
By request, we wanted to provide a text summary of our Think About #1: The Top Strategy for Providing Access to Opportunities.
JUST SAY “YES”, LET’S TRY IT. Many times, we are much too quick to bring up why something won’t work, especially for individuals with diverse abilities. From my experience, this typically comes from a place of fear and concern for the individual. Fear of the parent, teacher, caretaker, therapist looking like they don’t know what they are doing. Fear of the child or adult failing. Fear of the unknown because we have never done this before. Let’s try it and see what happens. Yes - do everything in your power to meet their individual communication, motor, sensory, developmental, etc. needs. But do not let those be the reasons to not do something.
But what if it doesn’t work? But what if it does?
What if we provided an incredible experience for that individual?
What if we gave access to an opportunity that every child or adult should have? Even if it looks a little different.
What if it doesn’t go that well the first 9 times, but goes incredibly well the 10th time?
What if they fall in love with a new activity?
What if we tried it and it improved their quality of life?
What if we just improved one moment of one day for the individual?
And if it truly is not the right fit or the right time, at least you know instead of always wondering. Maybe it’s not the end result that determines if something is worth doing, but the process and the experience that individual (and people working with them) goes through that makes it all worth it. JUST TRY IT.
